What is PIS
O PIS – Social Integration Program, is an amount that private companies deposit for their employees in a Caixa Econômica Federal account.
This money helps pay this employee's unemployment insurance and salary bonus.
O PIS can sometimes be found as PIS/PASEP or NIT/PIS. PASEP is the Public Servant Heritage Formation Program, a type of PIS for public servants.
In other words, employees of the Municipal Government, the State Government or the Federal Government.
Sometimes you may need to inform your NIS (Social Identification Number) also called NIT (Worker Identification Number) – which is the same PIS number.
When to use PIS
To access the salary bonus, unemployment insurance or the balance of your FGTS (Service Time Guarantee Fund) account, you need to provide your NIS number, also known as PIS/PASEP or NIT.
How to find out your PIS or NIS number

Firstly, you can find out your PIS in the FGTS statements that Caixa Econômica Federal provides.
Secondly, you can find your PIS number on your Citizen Card.
And thirdly, you can find it in your Work Card (CLT).
But if you don't have any of these documents on hand, you can easily know the PIS number making a query using your CPF (Individual Person Registration) number on the website My INSS – a tool that allows you to perform various services online in addition to consulting the PIS, see below.
How to find out your PIS number using your CPF
Access the website My INSS and follow the steps below:
- Access the My INSS portal
- Click Login (in the top right corner)
- Select the “Register” option
- Fill in the requested data (CPF, date of birth, name, email, cell phone, mother’s name and state)
- Authorize access to data and personal information in “Authorize”
- Write down the password that the system will create for you
- Enter your CPF and password
- Log in and change the password if desired to one you want
- Access the portal again, this time with your password
When you click on the top right corner, you will see the user's data, with their name, CPF and NIT/PIS. Ready! Now you know your number PIS by CPF!
